Why you keep quitting finance apps (and how to fix it)
Most people who start using a personal finance app quit before the first month is over. Not because the app is bad. But because logging expenses manually is a job that never ends.
This article explores why manual entry is the biggest obstacle to staying on top of your finances, what solutions exist, and which ones actually work.
The real problem isn't the app — it's friction
Imagine you finish a normal day: you paid for lunch, grabbed a coffee, stopped at the grocery store, and sent money for rent. Four transactions.
To log them in an app you need to:
- Remember each one (how much was the coffee, exactly?)
- Open the app and create each entry
- Find the right category
- Type the description
- Confirm the amount and date
- Repeat this four times
If you have more than three transactions a day, that's easily 20 minutes of administrative work every evening — work that produces no new information, just replicates what your bank already knows.
Your brain runs the calculation silently: high effort, low perceived benefit. And somewhere between week two and week four, the app gets closed and never reopened.
Why most apps haven't solved this
Most personal finance apps are designed around features — budgets, charts, categories, goals — and assume the user will feed the system with data. That assumption is the weak point of almost all of them.
The ones that do try to solve the data capture problem take different approaches, with very different results.
The three ways to automate expense tracking
1. Direct bank connection (open banking)
In countries with open banking regulation — mainly Europe (PSD2) and the United States — apps can connect directly to your bank through official APIs. Plaid, Salt Edge, and Tink are the most well-known intermediaries.
The advantage is obvious: logging is fully automatic, no user action required. The downside is that it depends on your bank having that API available, and on living in a country with the right regulatory framework. In most of Latin America and other regions, this doesn't yet exist at scale.
2. Screen scraping (credential-based access)
Some apps ask for your banking credentials and log in to your bank's portal as if they were you. It technically works, but comes with two serious problems: banks prohibit it in their terms of service, and giving your banking password to a third party is a real security risk.
It's a solution that exists, but one that banks and regulators are progressively eliminating.
3. Notification reading (SMS or email)
This is the most practical alternative in countries where open banking isn't available. Banks send a notification for every transaction — either by SMS or email. That notification contains the amount, date, and type of movement.
An app can read those notifications and extract the information automatically, without needing to access the banking portal or store passwords.
In India, for example, this approach is very mature because banks use standardized SMS formats. In Latin America and many other regions, most banks send email notifications with a consistent format for every transaction.
The user's role in each approach
The difference between these solutions isn't just technical — it's experiential:

Notification reading isn't perfectly automatic — it typically shows the user a pre-filled suggestion to confirm with a couple of taps — but it reduces the effort from 5 steps to 2. And that difference is enough for the habit to stick.
What to look for in an app if you want to automate
If you're evaluating options, these questions help you filter:
How does it capture transactions? An app that relies entirely on manual entry has a low usability ceiling, no matter how good its charts are.
Does it ask for your banking credentials? If yes, look for another option.
Does it support your bank? Verify that the app has support for your specific bank — or at least a way to request it.
How much control do you have over each entry? Automation shouldn't mean losing control. Ideally the system proposes and you confirm, so you can correct categories or descriptions before saving.
